EXTREME WEATHER CHAOS: Britain, Scotland, Wales And Ireland Hit By Heavy Rainfall, Widespread Flooding, Damaging Winds, And Raging Waves - At Least 7 Dead; 1,700 Homes Flooded In England; Over 300 Flood Warnings And Alerts; Over $500 MILLION In Damages To Ireland Alone; Waves Reach As High As 65 FEET; Over 100mph Gales Batter Towns; Forecasters Says Further Flooding Is Inevitable!

January 06, 2014 - UNITED KINGDOM - Britain is being battered again by storms and gale force winds - bringing flooding and travel chaos to many parts of the UK.

Stormy seas have caused problems in southwest coastal regions, and forecasters say there will be more violent weather over the next few days.

This is the latest storm front to hit Britain.

A Mercedes is pulled from rising waters in the tiny village of Muchelney, Somerset.

Inland, some villages on the Somerset Levels have been cut off, with residents in Muchelney, near Somerton, being supplied by boat.

In a statement to the Commons, Environment Secretary Owen Paterson said seven people had died and 1,700 homes had been flooded in England.

He said one million homes have so far been protected by flood defences, but there was a likelihood of more flooding "for some time to come" in Dorset and Wiltshire.

As gusts of up to 70mph hit western coasts, people were urged to remain vigilant and stay away from coastal roads, promenades and jetties with 25ft-high waves crashing on to beaches.

There are fears the next high tides will bring further coastal flooding.

Aberystwyth seafront - including 600 rooms of the university's student halls of residence facing the beach - was evacuated and rescue centres set up as high tides battered the coastline.

Sky's Mike McCarthy, at the scene, said: "The worst predictions are being realised. We have seen waves bringing rocks and stones forward over the fencing."

Student Millie Farmer, 19, said 12ft waves had crashed on to the promenade, ripping up paving slabs and leaving debris scattered on the front.

More flooding is expected in Dorset.

The severe weather has already taken its toll on the transport network and there was more disruption for commuters with roads closed and trains delayed or cancelled in areas.

Southern Railway services between Horsham and Dorking in Surrey will be out of action until early February after a landslip in Ockley.

And with hail providing an additional hazard, driving conditions are expected to be difficult too with the RAC expecting Monday to be one of the busiest days of the year for breakdowns, with 11,000 call-outs expected.

Aberystwyth seafront has been evacuated because of the storm.

Red areas show the flood warnings in place in Scotland.

Three severe flood warnings are in place in Dorset.

Muchelney in Somerset has been cut off, and many of the houses are flooded.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning - meaning "be aware" - for heavy rain, along with hail and thunder, in southern and western parts of Scotland, across Northern Ireland, north Wales, northwest and northeast England and the South.

With the ground saturated already following recent storms, the Environment Agency (EA) has issued three severe flood warnings.

All are in Dorset - one is near Bournemouth, another at Preston Beach in Weymouth, and the third is in the Chiswell area of Chesil Beach.

There are also more than 300 flood warnings and alerts covering every region in England and Wales.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has 11 flood warnings and 11 flood alerts in place.

Sky News weather producer Christopher England said: "There will be widespread heavy showers this evening, but southern and eastern Britain will be mainly dry.

"Strong winds gusting to over 60mph in the South and West will bring a risk of further coastal flooding during high tide." - SKY News.

Another Massive Storm On The Way As Ireland Reels At Raging Waves From Winter Fury.

Ireland’s Atlantic coastline is bracing itself for a massive new storm as towns and villages prepare for more flooding.

The country’s state weather service Met Eireann has issued another Orange Alert warning in advance of further high winds and heavy rain.

The damage already inflicted now stands at over $500million with more on the way.

Forecasters reports massive Atlantic swells moving with the storm and estimating waves in some areas could reach anywhere from 35ft to as high as 65ft.

Forecasters are warning that winds could get as high as 100 miles per hour on the west coast with heavy rain as very high tides and high seas add to the threat of coastal flooding.

The stormy conditions are expected to worsen on Sunday night with bands of heavy rain moving in from the Atlantic and bad weather set to last until Tuesday.

Parts of Cork, Galway, Clare, Limerick and Mayo have been badly hit with spectacular photographs online of the storm lashing the surf town of Lahinch.

The promenade in the famous Clare town was destroyed by an Atlantic storm surge while the town’s Seaworld tourist attraction suffered over $130,000 worth of damage.

Local councillor Bill Slattery told the Sunday Independent newspaper: “We are looking for emergency funding from the Government, as the local authority has no funding to repair the damage in Lahinch.

“I have never seen the devastation like it. A playground we had just opened two years ago was completely destroyed and the walkway surfaces along the seafront have been ripped up. Huge boulders were being thrown across the car park with the force of the tide.” - Irish Central.

EXTREME WEATHER: Complex Of Severe Earth Changes In The United States And Europe - Severe Storm, Flooding Risk From Omaha To St. Louis And Oppressive Heat Bakes Much Of Europe!

August 02, 2013 - UNITED STATES & EUROPE - Here are two reports from AccuWeather, illustrating the extreme weather taking place on either side of the Atlantic Ocean.
Severe Storm, Flooding Risk From Omaha To St. Louis.

A series of thunderstorms will continue to roll along over the central Plains, and some areas will be hit with severe weather into Saturday.

As one complex of storms that brought severe weather to Nebraska Thursday evening weakens over Missouri, a new batch of storms was already bringing severe weather to parts of South Dakota on Friday morning.

This new complex of storms will roll southeastward into Saturday across Nebraska, Missouri and parts of Kansas and Iowa. The storms could reach as far as Tennessee, northern Mississippi and Alabama later Saturday.

Cities and suburbs from Omaha, Neb., to Kansas City and St. Louis, Mo., are most likely have disruptive and damaging storms.

While frequent lightning strikes and hail will hit some communities hard, the greatest threat from the storms is damaging wind gusts and flash flooding.

Motorists should expect delays along I-29, I-70 and I-80 in the region, due to localized blinding downpours and excess water on the road surface.

For a few locations, this will be the second round in as many days of strong to severe thunderstorms, including parts of South Dakota, Nebraska and Kansas.

Much of the new rain falling on top of saturated ground will just run off into streams and rivers. People in unprotected, low-lying areas that are prone to flooding should keep a watchful eye.

Never drive across flooded roadways, as only about a foot of water can cause your vehicle to loose traction and could be swept downstream.

The rain is not unwanted in some areas. Portions of Iowa, for example, have had less than 25 percent of their normal rainfall during July.

Areas from western Nebraska southward to West Texas over the High Plains are in great need of rain. Much of this area is in extreme to exceptional drought. The storms into Saturday will avoid much of the drought areas over the High Plains.

Another complex of storms may fire farther south Saturday night and Sunday, beginning over parts of Kansas.

The storms are firing along shifting boundary between unusually cool air over the Midwest and 100-degree heat over much of Texas.

Interestingly, one of the disturbances producing the rounds of thunderstorms over the Plains has a chance at surviving a trip to the Gulf of Mexico early next week. Once in a while, such disturbances can develop into a tropical system.

Oppressive Heat Bakes Much Of Europe.

August got off to a scorching start across much of central and western Europe. A blast of hot air spread across the region allowing temperatures to soar into the mid- and upper 30s Celsius.

The hot spell preceded a storm system moving into the northern United Kingdom. Ahead of this storm, a flow of hot air from the south made for a very uncomfortable Thursday and Friday in many places.

A smattering of oppressively hot temperature observations include 35C (95F) in Rome, 34 in London, 33 in Frankfurt and 38 (101F) in Madrid.

While cooler weather pressed into England Friday, the heat was still on in central Europe. Florence, Italy climbed to 37C (99F) late in the afternoon while Frankfurt topped out near 35C.

This excessive heat continued the trend of a warm last month in much of Europe. Since July 1, locations such as London, Paris and Madrid have all averaged at least 2.8 degrees Celsius (5F) above normal.

Thankfully, a break from the heat is on the way for western Europe this weekend and into next week. Cooler air will filter into the region from the northern Atlantic and bring temperatures much closer to average.

While the western part of the continent cools, the core of the heat will shift eastward to include Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia and Croatia. Southern Spain as well as Italy will also remain quite warm.

Unprecedented summer snow in Norway June 29th

Via sott.net, 29 June 2013 - Snow fell on highway 7 over Hardangervidda on Saturday, but the snow plow came too late for this British couple.

In the trenches: The British couple had to call the tow truck before they could continue their holiday. - They are not so used to driving on this road conditions, says Morten Hansen from Traffic surveillance. There have been no reports of other accidents associated with snowfall.

- They had not driven more than 400 meters before they ended up in the ditch, says Kari Varberg (50), who owns and operates Dyranut Fjellstov

She sat at the breakfast table when it started snowing on Saturday morning.

Shortly after, she was called upon to take care of the two British campers who ended up in the ditch.

- They had woken up and seen that it was snowing, so they wanted to get out quickly on the fells, she says.

About the same time that she had picked them up and brought them back to the lodge, the rescue vehicle came.

As long Varberg can remember, there has not been snow on the mountain lodge at the end of June.

The lodge is situated on the highest point on highway 7

Drive Carefully

Security Operator Morten Hansen at the Traffic surveillance reported on slush and snowy roads at 800 meters on the Hardangervidda Saturday morning.

At 11 o'clock there was a snow plow in place to scrape the road from Sysendammen to Haugastøl.

- It was slippery up there, but it has been scraped off, and now it will be better temperature-wise. I think it's going to be alright now, says Hansen at 11:50.

IN WHITE: Saturday morning it snowed on Maurset in Eidfjord! This photo was taken a few miles from Vøringsfoss at Sysendammen, Saturday at 10.40am

He asks people to check the conditions on the 40-meter-long stretch that is now cleared.

- People do not bring snow tires to the lodge, when we get bad conditions they must wait throughout the day. There's no need for anyone to take unnecessary risks.

Almost below freezing

A BT reader says that the thermometer went down to zero, while it was snowing outside the cottage.

- We have a station at Finse, where the temperature is 0.9 degrees, says Halldis Berge, the local meteorologist.

- How is the weather on the Hardangervidda?

- Saturday may get more snow, possibly sleet. This will last the day. In the night, we're looking at the same situation, and Sunday the temperature will rise, says Berge.

Snow record last year

According Yr.no [Norwegian met office] it should have rained on Saturday morning with temperatures around 5 degrees Celsius. It didn't turn out that way.

Last year at this time, there was record snow in the western mountains. Not since NVE measurements began in 1971 has more snow been registered midway through June.

This year is different - a month ago NVE notified about abnormally little snow in the Norwegian mountains.

EXTREME "APOCALYPTIC" WEATHER: Mother Nature Strikes Italy Hard - Massive Rainfall Causing Flooding On Italian East Coast And Tornado In Italian Coastal Town Of Termoli Brings 150kmph Winds!

June 24, 2013 - ITALY - The following constitutes two reports of  two recent extreme weather events in Italy.

Massive Rainfall Causing Flooding On Italian East Coast.
Exactly as expected in recent days, the Riviera of Romagna and Marche in Italy are the areas most affected by the weather this afternoon: a real "water bomb" is affecting the area on the border between Marche and Emilia Romagna. In Riccione 81mm of rain has already fallen, with 73mm in Rimini and 33mm in Ancona. There are reports of flooding and blackouts, with traffic mayhem. Check out the images below that depict this rather apocalyptic scene. Up to 12cms of rain fell in one hour in some areas.

Heavy rainfall has caused flooding in the Emilia-Romagna and Marche areas of Eastern Italy.

Streets have been turned into rivers and highways have been closed.

Floods in Rimini and Ancona on the Italian East coast have inundated towns and cities

Tornado In Italian Coastal Town Of Termoli Brings 150kmph Winds.
A violent tornado, as we can see in the photo, made landfall in the early afternoon (just after 3pm) near Termoli on Italy's Adriatic coast, where a storm that had formed inland in the Molise region moved towards the city. The Air Force's own weather station in Termoli measured winds up to 148km/h (92mph).

Four waterspots form off Italy's Adriatic coast today, June 24th 2013.

For about 15 minutes violent rain fell along with heavy hail storms. Homes, shops and the train station of Termoli were flooded. The tornado, which lasted about ten minutes, uprooted trees, ripped roofs off houses and downed billboards. Many sea-side resort buildings experienced serious damage as the tornado swept through the area. Firefighters, police patrols, municipal police and traffic police were all called to the area.

Not only Italy but also the Croatian and Slovenian coastal areas were affected by severe weather today, Monday 24th June 2013. Violent hailstorms and tornadoes battered a large area of both sides of the Adriatic coast.
